Why Is My Website Slow? 10 Simple Fixes That Really Work

A slow website loses customers. Here are the 10 most common reasons websites are slow — and simple fixes for each.

Why Is My Website Slow? 10 Simple Fixes That Really Work

Quick answer: Most websites are slow because of big images, cheap or overloaded hosting, no caching, too many plugins, a heavy theme, or too many outside scripts (chat widgets, trackers, fonts). Fix these first: compress images to WebP, use good hosting with LiteSpeed or similar, turn on caching, remove unused plugins, and load scripts only where needed.

When a page takes too long to load, many people press “back” and go to a competitor. Google also uses speed as part of its ranking. Let’s fix it.

First, test your speed

Use free tools:

  • Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev)
  • GTmetrix

Look at Core Web Vitals — Google’s speed scores:

Score What it means Good target
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) How fast the main content shows 2.5 seconds or less
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) How fast the page reacts when you tap 200 ms or less
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) How much things jump around 0.1 or less

10 reasons your website is slow (and fixes)

1. Huge images

A photo straight from a phone can be 4–5 MB. Fix: resize to the size you need and convert to WebP. Use a plugin like LiteSpeed Cache, ShortPixel or Imagify.

2. Cheap or overloaded hosting

Very cheap hosting puts too many websites on one server. Fix: choose hosting with LiteSpeed or NGINX, PHP 8+, and servers near your visitors.

3. No caching

Without caching, the server builds every page again for every visitor. Fix: use a caching plugin like LiteSpeed Cache (on LiteSpeed hosting).

4. Too many plugins

Every plugin adds code. Fix: delete plugins you don’t use. Replace three small plugins with one good one.

5. Heavy theme or page builder

Some themes load lots of code on every page. Fix: use a lightweight theme and avoid loading unused widgets and fonts.

6. Too many outside scripts

Chat widgets, pop-ups, trackers, maps and videos each slow the page. Fix: load them only where needed, or after the page loads.

7. Web fonts loading slowly

Fix: use 1–2 fonts, host them on your own site, and preload the main one.

8. Videos and sliders at the top

Big sliders and autoplay videos hurt LCP. Fix: use one strong image or headline instead.

9. Old PHP version

Fix: ask your host to use PHP 8.1 or newer. It’s free and often makes WordPress much faster.

10. A messy database

Old revisions, spam comments and leftover data from deleted plugins slow things down. Fix: clean the database and limit revisions.

Bonus: use a CDN

A CDN (like Cloudflare or QUIC.cloud) keeps copies of your site around the world. Very useful if you have visitors in the UK, USA or Dubai.

How fast should a website be?

Aim for the main content to show in under 2.5 seconds on a phone. Our own WordPress theme loads its main content in about 1.5–2 seconds in our tests.

Questions people ask

Does website speed affect SEO?

Yes. Page experience, including Core Web Vitals, is one of many signals Google uses. Speed also affects how many visitors stay and contact you.

Why is my WordPress site slow?

Usually because of large images, too many plugins, a heavy theme, no caching or weak hosting.

Which is the best caching plugin for WordPress?

If your hosting uses LiteSpeed (like Hostinger), LiteSpeed Cache is a strong free choice. On other hosts, WP Rocket or similar plugins work well.

Will a faster website get more enquiries?

Usually, yes. Fewer people leave before the page loads, so more people see your offer and contact you.
